12 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1.5 cups packed light brown sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup high-quality caramel sauce
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a large 10×15 inch baking dish or a deep roasting pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray to ensure the apples don’t stick to the bottom.
In a very large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and the nutmeg. Stir well until every apple slice is evenly coated in the spice mixture. Spread the apples evenly into the prepared baking dish.
In another bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, salt, and the remaining tablespoon of cinnamon. Use a pastry cutter or your clean fingers to work the cold, cubed butter into the dry ingredients. Continue until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
Sprinkle the oat and butter mixture evenly over the top of the apples. Make sure to cover the edges so that the fruit is mostly hidden. Do not press the topping down; keep it light and airy for the best crunch.
Place the dish in the oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. You will know it is done when the topping is a deep golden brown and the apple juices are bubbling up around the edges. If the topping browns too quickly, cover it loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
Remove the crisp from the oven. While it is still hot, drizzle the caramel sauce generously over the entire surface. Allow the dessert to sit for at least 10 to 15 minutes before serving so the sauce can seep into the warm layers.
