Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) white or yellow cake mix (plus ingredients called for on the box: water, oil, and eggs)
  • 2 packages (3.4 oz each) instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 4 cups cold whole milk
  • 1 container (8 oz) whipped topping, thawed (or 3 cups homemade sweetened whipped cream)
  • 1/2 cup rainbow sprinkles (jimmies work best)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: Small cookies or extra frosting for garnish

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Bake the Cake: Preheat your oven according to the cake mix instructions. Prepare the cake in a 9×13 inch pan and bake until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan before proceeding to the next step.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Pudding: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the two packages of instant vanilla pudding mix and the cold milk. Continue whisking for about two minutes until the mixture begins to thicken. Stir in the vanilla extract for extra flavor and set it aside in the refrigerator for 5 minutes to firm up.
  3. Step 3: Cube the Cake: Once the cake is fully cooled, remove it from the pan. Use a serrated knife to cut the cake into uniform 1-inch cubes. Keeping the cubes consistent in size ensures that your layers look neat and professional inside the glass bowl.
  4. Step 4: Layer the Base: Place half of the cake cubes into the bottom of a large glass trifle bowl. Press them down slightly to create an even layer. Spread half of the prepared pudding over the cake, followed by half of the whipped topping. Sprinkle a generous tablespoon of rainbow sprinkles over the cream layer.
  5. Step 5: Repeat the Layers: Add the remaining cake cubes as the next layer. Top with the rest of the pudding and then the remaining whipped topping. Smooth the top with a spatula or use a piping bag to create decorative dollops of cream for a more finished look.
  6. Step 6: Garnish and Chill: Top the final layer with the remaining rainbow sprinkles. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 to 4 hours. This chilling time allows the cake to soak up a bit of the pudding, creating a moist and delicious texture.
